Be Like Monique

Be the reason someone gets a second chance.

Monique (23) helps children heal every day as a paediatric nurse at Zuid Afrikaans Hospital. But one day, she got the chance to save someone’s life beyond the hospital, by answering the call to donate her stem cells to a patient in need.

Monique had always been somewhat familiar with blood cancer and its impact on patients. But it wasn’t until she saw her mother register as a stem cell donor that she decided to do it too. After that, life carried on — until, four years later, the call came. She was a match.

Sharing what motivated her to go through with the donation, Monique says her mother’s breast cancer diagnosis had a profound impact on her and strengthened her commitment to helping others.

“After seeing what my mother went through when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, it made me realise how important it is to show up, so I ended up donating through peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donation. This is a nonsurgical procedure where blood is drawn from one arm, passed through a machine to collect stem cells, and then returned to the body through the other,” said Monique.

Reflecting on the process, Monique added: “The medical team guided me through every step and made sure I was comfortable the whole time.”

Today, Monique shared that it’s such a small thing to do that can change a person’s entire life.
