For her, the decision to register as a stem cell donor was not difficult. “The idea of helping someone in such a simple way made the decision effortless," she shares. "In a world where we should all look out for each other, this is a great way to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life, and their family.”
Theresa first registered as a donor at the Kirstenbosch Carols event in 2022. Though she Theresa was certain she wanted to help ad always wanted to help, there she still felt was hesitation. “I was hesitant because I thought the process would be horrendous and scary," she recalls. "But when the DKMS Africa staff spoke at the event, explaining that there were patients who needed us at that very moment, it moved me to learn more.” She visited the DKMS Africa donor recruitment stand and discovered that the process was far simpler and less daunting than she had imagined.
Besides her noble role as a donor, Theresa is a wife, and, family is at the heart of everything she does. “I cherish spending quality time with my loved ones, and I enjoy being creative in my spare time, whether through baking or arts and crafts."
When Theresa found out she was a match for a patient, her emotions were a mix of excitement and gratitude. “I was excited to help and make a difference in someone's life," she says. The donation day itself was surprisingly calm. “On that day, I had the opportunity to rest. It was an easy process, I was hooked up to the machine in both arms, and I slept through most of it.”
Her message to others is heartfelt and simple; "Someone out there is waiting on you, and you may be their only hope. It’s an easy process, far easier than you'd expect."
