Godfrey (11) from KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga is in desperate need of a lifesaving stem cell transplant. Your selfless act of registering to become a stem cell donor could be his long awaited lifeline.
Betty, Godfrey’s mother, first noticed something was wrong when her usually bubbly son began to lose his spark. Her concern grew as he became increasingly slow in completing everyday tasks, and when he started experiencing uncontrollable bleeding, she knew something was seriously wrong.
In April 2019, she sought medical help but it wasn’t until 2023, that they were referred to Steve Biko Academic Hospital, where Godfrey was diagnosed with Aplastic Anaemia. Since then, the journey has been incredibly challenging as the mother and son duo travel from Mpumalanga to Steve Biko Academic Hospital every month for Godfrey’s blood transfusions.
His health challenges have affected his schooling, and last year he was unable to pass Grade 5 due to the frequent disruptions and difficulty coping in class.
Speaking of her son’s journey, Betty says: “I didn’t know about this illness. It was only when Godfrey was diagnosed that I came to know it. Even though I struggle to understand it, I see what it is doing to my son”.
Luckily, the blood transfusions have helped. Betty has also found some comfort in her family’s support.
