4-year-old Nqobimpi from Gauteng has been diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. She urgently needs a stem cell match to survive. You can help give her a chance at childhood again by becoming a donor.
Zodwa (Nqobimpi’s mom) could have never imagined that her 4-year-old precious daughter would face a life threatening challenge at a tender age. Little Nqobi’s ill health started with long and consistent nose bleeds, later accompanied by her vomiting blood and becoming increasingly weak and pale around May this year. When she started falling, Zodwa decided to take her to their local clinic.
Little Nqobi was referred to George Mukhari Hospital for blood transfusions as her blood count was considerably low. Further tests revealed her T-Cell ALL diagnosis.
Zodwa says she wasn’t aware children could get cancer as it wasn’t the norm in her experience. Faced with the reality of having to care for her three children with her humble means, her new reality of an ailing child in hospital brought with it additional uncertainty for the family.
Nqobi’s treatment included chemo and blood transfusions, with hospital stays lasting a full month before being able to go home for a few days. “I had to pull Nqobi out of creche as she wasn’t able to attend. It has been such a struggle to see my little girl go through something so big at such a young age”.
Zodwa is grateful for the support of her family which allows her to be able to spend days in hospital with little Nqobi while her other two children are looked after. She worries mostly about how Nqobi’s illness has affected her other daughter and son who constantly find themselves worried about their baby sister. “Their marks have gone down, even though they are trying hard to focus at school”, says Zodwa.
Little Nqobi wants nothing more than to return home and play with her dolls, enjoying her childhood. Help make this a reality by registering to become a stem cell donor.
If you are between 17 - 55 and in good health, you can make a difference today. Register and help give patients a second chance at life.
Remember, all costs related to the donation process are taken care of by DKMS Africa.
