Little Oyintando Needs a Hero. Could It Be You?

Help Lindiwe Fight Blood Cancer

Oyintando (2) was diagnosed with Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome in 2023. At the time, he was living with his grandmother showing worrying symptoms painful boils on his head and throat, and he began vomiting blood. His grandmother rushed him to the hospital, where he was admitted and stayed for a month.

However, with no improvement, he was taken to a different hospital. There, more tests were done, and the doctors needed detailed information to figure out what was wrong. He was still vomiting blood and was eventually diagnosed with CMV (Cytomegalovirus), for which he began receiving treatment.

After spending six weeks in the hospital, Oyintando was discharged and given a follow-up appointment. During that check-up, the doctor referred him to another hospital for further investigation. It was there that Oyintando finally received his full and accurate diagnosis of Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome.

His mother, Bonakele, remembers the moment clearly.

“I was terrified when I heard the diagnosis. I had an older child who passed away, and Oyi was showing the same symptoms. It brought back so many painful memories,” she says. “The doctors explained everything to me, and over time, I had to come to terms with the reality.”

During those early days, Bonakele was even afraid to feed him.

“He would cry for more breastmilk, but I was scared that he would vomit everything if I gave him more.”

Today, Oyi is a playful little boy. He loves playing with other kids, and even when he’s indoors, he gets excited just hearing children playing outside.

He still attends regular hospital appointments, which have become a financial strain for his mother.

“I just want my child to get a donor so that we can live a normal life,” says Bonakele.

“To other parents going through something similar support your child as best you can. I know it’s not easy having a sick child. Be strong.”
