Akhona, our milestone 100,000th donor, registered at a Cape Town campus drive, driven by a desire to help others and make a difference. Her journey highlights the importance of community support and inspires young South Africans to consider becoming stem cell donors.
Cape Town, 23 September 2024 - Meet Akhona - our 100 000th donor who registered to become a potential lifesaver at a campus donor drive in Cape Town.
She was inspired to register to become a potential stem cell donor due to her upbringing in an environment that places value on kindness and ubuntu. At the campus drive, Akhona learned that finding a perfect matching stem cell donor can be especially challenging for patients from ethnically diverse backgrounds.
"Where I come from, we don't leave anyone behind. It's not just a saying—it’s a way of life. We lift each other up, knowing that when one of us rises, we all need to do the same. That’s just how it is, and how it’s always been. Learning that Amahle took that step on campus and was found to be a match inspired me to carry her bravery with me. The spirit of Ubuntu runs deep in my life, and I was amazed to learn that a patient’s future could be tied to me simply by signing up…so, I did,” she shared.
Akhona hopes that her journey will inspire other young South African to also play the part and be someone’s missing link.
