Ashan Needs a Stem Cell Donor

Help Ashan Find the Matching Stem Cell Donor He Needs

Ashan is a husband, father of three and civil engineer from Durban whose life changed after a minor injury led to an unexpected diagnosis, leaving him urgently searching for a matching stem cell donor.

In January this year, Ashan was out on the water with his brother when he slipped and scraped his shin against the boat. It seemed like a harmless scratch at first, but two weeks later, his legs began to swell, followed by a persistent burning sensation.

While doctors initially suspected a localised infection, routine blood tests returned alarming results: Ashan’s white blood cell count was dangerously high.

“Everything happened so quickly. I was doing blood tests, a bone marrow biopsy, an MRI, and a CT scan. I was thinking, ‘What’s going on? What did you find? What are you looking for?’”

Within weeks, Ashan received a diagnosis of myelofibrosis, a rare bone marrow disorder that severely disrupts the body's normal production of blood cells. For a man who had always lived an active, healthy life, the news was a profound shock.

Before his diagnosis, Ashan lived an active life and enjoyed spending time outdoors.
“I’m the last person my family expected to get this. I had to read up on stem cells to understand the reality of the situation, what the next step was, and what it all meant for my future.”

Ashan’s wife, children, and extended family have rallied around him as they adjust to a diagnosis nobody saw coming. While his siblings and relatives immediately stepped forward to be tested, none were found to be a suitable match.
