Donor Krishan: turning grief into hope for a stranger

In 2022, his life changed when his twin sister’s son was diagnosed with blood cancer. As the family desperately searched for a stem cell donor, they discovered DKMS. Krishan and other family members registered, hoping that one of them could be a match.

“Before my nephew’s diagnosis, I knew nothing about stem cell donation or organisations like DKMS. The registration process was surprisingly simple just a cheek swab.” Sadly, none of them were a match for his nephew, who passed away in 2023.

For Krishan, the experience left him with a deeper understanding of what families go through when someone they love is waiting for a donor. But because he remained on the DKMS donor registry, his story did not end there.

Sometime after registering, Krishan received a call informing him that he had been identified as a match for a patient in need of a stem cell transplant.

“My answer was an absolute yes. Having lost so many loved ones over the years, the thought that I could possibly help save someone else’s was overwhelming in the best possible way.”

“Before donating, I went through a series of tests to confirm that I was still a suitable match and healthy enough to donate. I underwent blood tests, followed by further testing in December and a full medical examination in January, including a chest X-ray, ultrasound and additional blood work.

“In the days before donation, I received treatment to stimulate my stem cell production. I was informed about possible side effects but I was fortunate not to experience any,” said Krishan.

All his testing and travel costs were covered by DKMS, meaning there was no financial burden on him.

“Blood was drawn from one arm and passed through a machine that separated the stem cells. The remaining blood was then returned through my other arm. Two nurses monitored me throughout the procedure,” shared Krishan.

For Krishan, the process was worth it because of what the donation could mean for someone else.

“I was surprised to learn that only a few registered donors proceed with donation after receiving the call that they are a match. That alone shows how important commitment is.”

“My deepest hope is that the recipient makes a full recovery and goes on to live a long, happy life with their family. I encourage everyone to consider registering as a stem cell donor.”

Krishan registered hoping he could help someone he loved but that was not the case. By staying on the registry, he eventually helped someone else.
